Get a Move On for Turkey Day
Thanksgiving is traditionally a time for families to gather together and enjoy one of the biggest feasts of the year. But it also has become a popular day for getting up and getting active before or after eating a big meal. According to the American Council on Exercise, enjoying some physical activity before a holiday feast is a great way to rev up your metabolism, boost your energy, and even curb your appetite. Here are some great ways to do just that:
- Participate in a Turkey Trot run or walk. An organized race is a fun activity for the whole family! Even those who are unathletic can participate, thanks to the walking option. In addition to providing an invigorating start to your day, it’s also a wonderful way to socialize and release stress.
- Play a game. Even if you want to stay close to home, you can still get out of the house and enjoy a game of flag football, croquet, or even “pumpkin bowling,” which uses small pumpkins as “bowling balls.”
- Take a hike. You don’t need an official, organized event to get up and move! Enjoy the fall foliage with a brisk hike. Whether it’s a wooded hiking trail or a paved walking trail, a hike is a wonderful way to get up and go. Before you leave the house, make sure you have a fully charged cellphone and are wearing bright, highly visible colors. And leave the earbuds at home — listening to music while walking or running makes you less aware of your surroundings. So take this time to talk with your loved ones!
