Peace on Earth and Peace of Mind

Winter is upon us, bringing all manner of chores and checklists for homeowners as we hunker down for the months ahead. These tried-and-true safety tips will help you on your way.

  • Clean gutters, check weather strips and insulation, and inspect your roof for leaks well before inclement weather arrives.
  • Pipe protection and insulation may sound like a hassle, but it’s got nothing on the alternative. A few straightforward steps will help you preserve your pipes, hoses, and sprinkler systems all winter long.
  • Call in the experts to ensure your HVAC system is clean, ventilated, and in good status. The same goes for fireplaces and chimneys.
  • Remember to winterize and protect your outdoor assets as well, including pools, boats, and lawn furniture.
  • Install a carbon-monoxide detector in your home, and keep camp stoves, generators, and other such equipment outside the house.
  • Use caution when building fires indoors. A roaring fireplace is an obvious source of warmth and comfort, but it’s also on par with a campfire in your living room, and should receive just as much reverence.
  • Know that heated bedding has its drawbacks, too. Electric blankets have great snuggling appeal, but should be used with caution.
  • Maintain a storm-ready emergency kit that includes water; safety devices such as flashlights and handheld lamps; extra batteries; and sand, road salt, or cat litter for icy walkways.
  • Finally, be mindful when you do venture out. So named for its ability to disappear over asphalt, black ice is a common winter road hazard that calls for common sense.
