An Apple Pie Takes The Cake
As far as cream pies go, eh, I can take ’em or leave ’em. But, a fruit pie, now that’s a whole different story. My family’s favorite is apple pie with a crispy, sugar and cinnamon crust. My favorite recipe is pretty basic, but I highly recommend following the link and making the pie crust. You’ll be amazed at how a few special seasonings and a little apple juice in the crust will make all the difference.
Ingredients:
- Recipe for one Apple Pie Crust, or store-bought, roll-out crust
- ½ cup butter
- 3 tablespoons flour
- ¼ cup water
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon molasses
- 8 Granny Smith apples
- ¼ cup butter, melted
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg
In a small saucepan, melt the butter on medium-low heat. Once the butter is melted, stir in the flour to make a paste. Add water, sugar, and molasses to the paste. Use a whisk to stir the mixture to ensure that everything is well mixed. Raise the heat slightly and let it simmer while you prepare the crust and apples. Make sure to stir it occasionally, and don’t let it come to a rapid boil or else you will end up with a huge mess.
Next, roll out one pie crust and place it in your favorite pie dish. Peel, core, and slice the apples and mound them into the pie crust. Now, pour the butter sauce over the apples, coating all of the apples evenly.
Topping things off
The top pie crust comes with options. If you feel like being creative, I totally recommend trying a lattice top. Granted, not everyone has the time for that kind of commitment.
If you just cover the pie with a solid top, make sure that you cut a few venting slits in the crust. Brush ¼ cup of melted butter, coating the entire pastry surface. Whisk together 1/3 cup of sugar, 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, and ½ teaspoon of nutmeg. Sprinkle evenly over the pie top.
We are almost to the good part
Cover the pie and bake for 15 minutes at 425 degrees. Take the pie out of the oven and remove the cover. Turn the oven temperature down to 350 degrees, return the pie to the oven and bake for 35-45 minutes, or until it is golden brown. Cool for at least 1 hour before cutting.
This pie is the perfect comfort food for a cold, blustery day when you just want to stay in the house. Make sure that you have some whip cream or ice cream to go on top, then sit back and let everyone tell you how much they love you … and your pie.
