These simple baked donuts are as delicious as they are speedy. With this standard batter recipe, you’re set to whip up a batch to glaze, dust, and top. Makes 12.

Donuts

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup whole milk (or dairy-free option)
  • 1/4 cup yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted, plus more for greasing the pan
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla bean paste

Method:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 F and lightly grease a donut pan. If you don’t have a donut pan, a muffin tin works fine.
  • Combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, and nutmeg in a bowl.
  • In a separate bowl, mix sugar, egg, milk, yogurt, melted butter, and vanilla essence until smooth and fully combined.
  • Slowly whisk the wet ingredients into the flour mix. The batter should be very thick. Spoon it into a piping bag (or a zippered bag with the corner snipped off) and fill each hole in the pan 2/3full.
  • Bake for 9 to 10 minutes, turning the pan halfway through. Remove from oven, let sit in the pan for 5 minutes, then turn onto a cooling rack to cool.
  • Once cool, top with any of the below!

Chocolate Frosting

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup mixed dark and milk chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 2 teaspoons light corn syrup
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Toasted peanuts and coconut flakes (optional)
  • Sprinkles (optional)

Method:

Combine ingredients (except for peanuts, coconut, and sprinkles) in a small pan and melt over a low heat, stirring thoroughly. Remove from heat and leave to one side to cool and thicken. Once the donuts have cooled, dip them into the glaze until it’s nearly set, then dip into peanuts or coconut or sprinkles, if desired. Leave to fully set for at least half an hour.
