6 Ways to Help Prevent Package Theft
Receiving a package should be exciting, but the rise in package theft can cause a headache. No one wants to worry about a “porch pirate” snatching their goods. If you work in an office during the day or travel frequently, it’s worth implementing some best practices to make sure your package actually makes it into the house. Here are six tips for how to prevent package theft.
Optimize Delivery Notifications
Whether you’re using FedEx, UPS, or the U.S. Postal Service, all mail carriers offer the option to sign up for delivery alerts. This way, you can track your packages and stay updated on delivery times to prevent boxes from sitting outside for an extended period. Just remember to retrieve the package quickly once it’s been delivered.
Require a Signature for Delivery
In the same vein as delivery notifications, consider requiring a signature before a package can be dropped off. That way, the delivery driver can’t leave a package unless you’re there to sign, eliminating unattended packages from sitting on your porch.
Ship to a P.O. Box or Pickup Location
If you work long hours or are out of town often, consider sending your packages to a P.O. box or designated carrier pickup location to prevent package theft. It requires an extra trip, but having it delivered to a secure location eliminates any worry if you know you won’t be home for a package’s arrival.
Keep Your Porch Visible
It may sound counterintuitive, but a potential thief may be less likely to steal a package if your porch is well lit and others can easily see it.
Install a Video Doorbell
Video doorbells are incredibly popular for an added level of home protection, doubling as a security camera. Not only may this discourage a thief if they know they’re being recorded, but many brands like Ring, Nest, and Arlo have motion sensors that will send an alert when someone is at your door. Plus, if someone is at the door, the camera records live footage and audio for your viewing.
Purchase a Mailbox Sensor
As the name suggests, a mailbox sensor is a small device that attaches to your mailbox (or anywhere you choose to put it) and alerts you when it’s been opened. This doubles as a way to tell you when your mail has been delivered and if an unfamiliar person opens your mailbox. Automatic light timers and motion-censored lights surrounding your patio or mailbox are other suitable options to discourage porch pirates.
Now that you know how to prevent package theft, ensure the rest of your home is safe and secure while traveling.
