Guide to Amusement Parks

By DeAnna Janes 4.30.25

Summer is fun in the sun, toes in the grass, sweet tea on ice … and the sound of “I’m bored” on repeat. Luckily, Texas is brimming with ways to keep you and your kids entertained without breaking the bank and without having to brave crazy crowds.

We’ve rounded up the best local and somewhat lesser-known amusement and adventure parks from the Panhandle to Galveston Bay. Most locations are family-owned and operated, and all are peak Texas-sized family fun. Pro tip: Wear comfortable shoes.

Big Rivers Waterpark & Adventures, New Caney

Suit up for a water-soaked good time with the whole family at Big Rivers. Not your granddaddy’s water park, this gem offers visitors river racing, zip-lining, aerial obstacle courses, and so much more. Best part? The lazy river meandering throughout the park.

Morgan’s Wonderland is the world’s first “ultra-accessible” theme park, offering complete accessibility to every ride and attraction for guests with disabilities. With a dedicated sensory-themed area, the park features a 1930s-style train ride, an 8-acre lake, and an amphitheater.

Peppa Pig Theme Park, North Richland Hills

Fans of the adorable pink pig with a British accent will get all their little hooves can handle at this newly opened park. Attractions include a Muddy Puddles Splash Pad, Daddy Pig’s Roller Coaster, as well as shows, shopping, and dining spots.

There is much to see and do in the Panhandle at Wonderland Amusement Park. From the site’s roller coasters, thrill rides, and waterslides to family classics, such as mini golf and arcade games, a whirlwind of fun awaits.

Splashway Waterpark & Campground, Sheridan

As if the wave pools, twisty slides, and lazy lagoons weren’t enough to lure you and yours to Splashway, the park also hosts campgrounds equipped with RV hookups, lodgings for rent, and on-site dining. Meaning: Instead of riding home in wet clothes, you can stay the night.

Kiddie Park, San Antonio

Touted as “America’s Oldest Children’s Amusement Park,” this classic was established in 1925 and features a 1920s theme. To-do’s you’ll want to check off include riding the old-fashioned Ferris wheel and taking a spin on the hand-carved Herschell-Spillman carousel.

Kemah Boardwalk, Galveston Bay

Perched on the coast, Kemah Boardwalk is a scenic beacon of family-friendly fun. When you’re not throwing your hands in the air on roller coasters, you could be lounging in one of two Ferris wheels, strolling the boardwalk, or getting up close and personal with stingrays.

Texas heat is serious. Find relief at Epic Waters, an indoor park that turns up the temp on fun. Honoring the park’s name, the rides inside are epic, including twisty tubes and thrilling drops. For those who want to stay dry, there’s dining and shopping. Bonus: This spot is open year-round.
