Mother’s Day in Texas

By Ginni Beam 4.30.25

While flowers and cards are great, next-level moms deserve next-level celebrations. Experiences tend to make most recipients happier than gifts, and in a state as big and diverse as Texas, there are lots of options. Here are a few ideas for the moms in your life.

Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen Cooking Classes, Houston

Take your mom out for Tex-Mex, and she’ll be fed for a day; take her to Tex-Mex cooking classes, and she’ll be able to satisfy her cravings any time she wants. Renowned chef Sylvia Casares loves to share her passion for cooking and brings 20 years of restaurant experience to her group classes. Participants will learn to make tamales, fajitas, enchiladas, or something equally delicious and then enjoy a full meal with a drink and dessert. Be sure to reserve your spot in advance. (Note: If your mom regularly cooks Tex-Mex for you, proceed with caution, lest the gift be interpreted as a critique of her culinary skills.)

Bluebonnet Photos, Marble Falls

Every Texas mother wants some nice pictures of her kids in the bluebonnets, but  making it happen can feel like a hassle. So, this year, do all the work for her. Encourage the whole family to dress up and make the trip out to Marble Falls, preferably timing it so you arrive during golden hour for the most flattering lighting. Bring bribes to pacify any young children, scope out the trails in advance, and find a good spot that isn’t on someone’s private property. Make sure Mom is in the pictures, too, whether that means hiring a photographer, setting up a tripod and a timer, or taking turns behind the camera.

Star Party at McDonald Observatory, Fort Davis

If you live in a big city, you can easily go years without seeing a truly spectacular night sky. Go back to basics with a Star Party deep in the heart of Texas at the McDonald Observatory in Fort Davis. The evening starts with a tour of the night sky’s main attractions, before guests view various night sky objects through the observatory’s telescopes. (They have enough to go around.) Plan ahead with conversation topics and a Texas road trip playlist to make the drive part of the experience.

Custom Perfumery Workshop, Dallas

Buying perfume for someone else is always a risk, and frankly, it’s too expensive to guess. Instead, celebrate your mom’s individuality by taking her to create her own signature fragrance at Malibu Apothecary in Dallas. Perfume experts will walk her through every step — choosing top, middle, and base “notes” that play well together, exploring different scents to find a combination that resonates, and then bottling it up for her to enjoy on many future special occasions. Scent is closely tied to emotion and memory, so she’ll be reminded of your love for her every time she wears it.

‘Run This Mother’ 5K & Half-Marathon, San Antonio

This gals-only race is the perfect Mother’s Day bonding experience for active moms and daughters. No worries if you’re not intense athletes — all participants will go home with some fun swag and will get to enjoy breakfast tacos and other treats. The course, which starts and ends in Comanche Park in San Antonio, is beautiful and scenic.

Vintage Market Days of Dallas-McKinney, McKinney

If your mom loves shopping, make it the best Mother’s Day weekend ever by taking her to this upscale three-day market event at McKinney’s Myers Park and Event Center to choose her own gift. Wear comfortable shoes; there are two buildings of treasures and treats to roam. Whatever your mom is into — jewelry, antiques, clothes, art, home décor, and much more — she’ll find it here. Grab lunch from the food truck, enjoy some live music, and do your part to support small-business owners.

Whether you’re looking for another Mother’s Day outing, or just want a relaxing weekend activity, these iconic tearooms in Texas are worth the visit.
