Save Now for that Summer Vacation

By James Mayfield 3.12.14

With summer just around the corner, now is the time to start planning that vacation.  Whether it’s a dream trip to Disney or just a romantic weekend getaway, you’ll enjoy your adventure more if it’s paid for in full.

Start with a budget — your goal is now in sight.

Re-examine your expenses: How often do you really use that gym membership? Are you taking advantage of bundling discounts for phone, Internet and TV? Call service providers and see what they can do. You’ll be amazed how much you can save, and put those savings toward your vacation fund.

Look around you: Clean out those overstuffed closets, the attic and the garage, even storage units. You now have fresh motivation to finally clear out the clutter — and make a profit on eBay, Craigslist, or at your local clothing consignment store or neighborhood garage sale.

And what about the pantry that’s been filled to overflowing for years? Be creative and see how many meals you can make before you take another trip to the supermarket.

Get the whole family in on the act: There’s always the family change jar. Every night “deposit” spare change (or quarters or even single dollar bills). Make a chart that shows the family’s progress toward your goal.

Where should you put all these newfound savings? Consider opening a Money Market Account with Farm Bureau Bank, which you can initiate with $100. There’s no monthly fees.

Starting to save for vacation is that easy. Before you know it, you’ll be headed out on the trip of your dreams.
