By Staci Parks 7.16.24

Texas has a proud tradition of producing legendary Olympians. Whether breaking — and setting — records or lending their names to signature moves, Texan Olympians have a specific grit and resilience ideal for the world’s stage.

In a sea of familiar faces and exciting newcomers, meet some of the notable Texas athletes headed to Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games.

Simone Biles, Gymnastics

Spring

Biles, the most decorated Olympic gymnast of all time, has become a household name in the past decade with her magnetic energy, laser focus, and perfect execution of complicated technical moves. Her performance at the 2023 world championships resulted in a skill being named after her.

Asher Hong, Gymnastics

Tomball

Known for his power and precision, Hong is a standout gymnast across multiple events, including floor exercise and vault. Hong secured his first spot on Team USA after a challenging Olympic trial, but his confidence, thanks to years of hard work, impressed judges and spectators alike.

Bryce Hoppel, Track

Midland

The Paris Games will be the second Olympics for the reigning world champion in the indoor 800m. As a student athlete at the University of Kansas, Hoppel clinched first place in the 800m at the NCAA indoor and outdoor championships.

Jeffrey Louis, Breaking

Houston

Louis, who’s also known as “Bboy Jeffro,” will make history this summer as breaking, formerly referred to as breakdancing, debuts as an Olympic sport. Louis’ performances have taken him around the world and earned him a Monster Energy sponsorship. The athlete also used his kinesiology degree from the University of Houston to create FitBreak, a fitness program that combines dancing and exercises.

Ryann Phillips, Women’s Trap

Gail

Phillips was first introduced to the sport in third grade and has since represented Team USA around the world. Phillips’ rigorous training, composure, and precision shone through during the Olympic qualifiers at the Tucson Trap & Skeet Club, where she secured her spot. She will be making her Olympic debut in Paris.

Sha’Carri Richardson, Track

Dallas

Dubbed the fastest woman in the world, Richardson is primed for Olympic glory after winning gold medals in the 100M and 4X100M relay at the 2023 World Championships. Richardson is known for her vibrant personality, tenacious competitive spirit, and lightning speed.

Scottie Scheffler, Golf

Dallas

Fresh off a second Masters win, Scheffler is currently ranked No. 1 in the world. The first-time Texas Olympian’s consistent performance mathematically guaranteed him a spot in France while the qualification period for golf was still ongoing.

Jaedyn Shaw, Soccer

Frisco

The 19-year-old soccer sensation is known for “playing beyond her years,” according to her U.S. Women’s Soccer teammates. Shaw’s momentum has held steady since her USWST debut last year, scoring seven goals in 11 appearances for the national team.

Sam Watson, Sport Climbing

Southlake

The 18-year-old is already favored to win gold in his summer games debut. Recently, at the World Cup in China, Watson broke the world record in sport climbing’s speed discipline — twice in the span of an hour.

The Summer Olympics formally begin with an opening ceremony on July 26 in Paris. While you’re gearing up for the games, read about 14 other Texans you should know.
