Texas Sheet Cake Recipe
Native Texans all know the glories of the iconic Texas sheet cake. So without further ado, here is the classic recipe in all its glory. This recipe takes 12 to 14 servings.
Ingredients
For the cake:
2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
2 cups sugar
½ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon salt
2 sticks slated butter
4 heaping tablespoons good-quality cocoa powder
1 cup boiling water
½ cup buttermilk
2 eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
For the icing:
14 tablespoons salted butter
4 heaping tablespoons good-quality cocoa powder
6 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 pound powdered sugar, sifted
Method
Preheat oven to 350 F. Mix flour, sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a medium bowl.
Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Mix in cocoa powder, then a cup of boiling water, and simmer for 30 seconds. Mix into the flour mixture and set aside.
Mix buttermilk, eggs, baking soda, and vanilla in a separate bowl, then mix into the flour mixture until well incorporated. Pour cake batter into a 13×9 baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes.
You can make the icing in the same saucepan. Melt butter over medium heat, then mix in cocoa powder and remove from heat. Add vanilla, milk, and powdered sugar and stir until well combined.
Pour warm icing over warm cake. Cut your cake into squares and enjoy!
