11 Unique Texas Vacation Rentals
Vacationing in Texas can be an act of defiance to well-meaning, well-traveled onlookers. But why leave the state when it’s got everything? Rolling hills, majestic deserts, lush forests, vibrant cities. When road tripping to explore our vast state, don’t opt for a typical, dull hotel room. Book a unique, distinctive rental — something you’ll remember for years to come.
There’s no shortage of extraordinary getaways in Texas, whether you’re looking for a chic “barndominium” literally made for TV, a relaxing treetop Hill Country hideaway, or a luxury desert escape with a quirky twist.
Falkenstein Castle, Burnet
This Hill Country stay is fit for royalty — and it’s another testament to the area’s German influence. Make your European dreams come true at this 14,000-square-foot castle, inspired by Bavaria’s Neuschwanstein Castle (which also influenced Disneyland’s “Sleeping Beauty” castle). Channel your inner Disney princess with a stroll through the castle grounds. You may encounter Texas wildlife such as birds, deer, roadrunners, and — if you’re quiet and fortunate — ringtail cats. If this castle is unavailable, try The Castle at Lake Livingston.
The Silver Spur Resort, Canton
Put on your pioneer hat, circle the wagons, and spend a night on the open plains. Well, sort of. You’ll find an assortment of Conestoga wagons (commonly known as covered wagons) at this East Texas vacation spot. Unlike the 1800s, these wagons are outfitted with king-sized beds and — perhaps more important — heat and air. End the night telling creepy Texas tales around the space’s private fire ring while assembling s’mores.

The Yurtopian, Dripping Springs & Wimberley
Choose from one of 16 authentic Mongolian yurts in peaceful settings overlooking the gorgeous Texas Hill Country. (The resorts are about 30 miles apart but offer similar experiences.) Each yurt features hand-painted décor; vintage furnishings; and a spacious, two-story deck with a private hot tub and firepit. Bonus: The Dripping Springs location is pet–friendly.

The Range Vintage Trailer Resort, Ennis
You’ll have your pick of seven Airstreams from the ’50s and ’60s at this “vintage trailer resort,” located about 30 minutes southeast of downtown Dallas. You’ll have plenty of space, as the vintage trailers are spread across 30 acres. Guests also have access to a pool, restaurant, bathhouse, and firepit, making it the perfect weekend getaway for couples and small families. (Most Airstreams can accommodate between two and four guests.)

Longneck Manor, Fredericksburg
Take a walk on Texas’ wild side deep in the heart of the Hill Country. You’ll find a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sleep in a 1,200-square-foot suite on the second floor of a giraffe barn. You’ll also have the chance to feed the giraffes and rhinos on site, as well as a private “Meet and Greet Animal Keeper” session.

Grand Manor Mansion, Galveston
A stay in this elegant, tropical mansion is a step back in time to when Galveston was the financial capital of the South. This Victorian treasure, built in 1905, is within walking distance of Galveston’s beloved Strand District. Regarded as one of the top architectural structures on the island, you’ll find a grand staircase, luxurious balcony suite, and clawfoot tub.

‘Fixer Upper’ Barndominium, Lacy Lakeview
This five-bedroom estate helped ignite the “barndominium” craze after being featured on Chip and Joanna Gaines’ wildly popular “Fixer Upper” TV show. The interior still has the Gaines’ magic touch, but the surrounding 16 acres — abundant with huge oak trees — are worth a look too. Kick back on the two-story, 800-square-foot deck, or enjoy the 25-acre spring-fed lake.

Missing Hotel, Marble Falls
Enjoy the great outdoors perched inside of a geodesic dome. You’ll feel like you’re floating among the treetops while stargazing and savoring panoramic views. Each dome is tucked away to ensure privacy and comes with its own plunge pool — the perfect end to a day of hiking the nearby trails. Before you leave, stop by and say hi to the property’s mini cows, Elvis and Presley.

El Cosmico, Marfa
Imagine you’re on a safari — in the middle of Marfa. El Cosmico has 120-square-foot tents with wood floors and canvas walls. While there, hunt the elusive Marfa Lights or head to the McDonald Observatory. If a safari tent isn’t your speed, El Cosmico also has several trailers, tents, and other structures perfect for a good night’s sleep.

Cypress Valley, Spicewood
Immerse yourself in nature and wake up among ancient cypress trees in one of Cypress Valley’s carefully crafted treehouses. “The Nest” is one of the property’s most enchanting options as it’s perched atop a picturesque creek ravine. Take a swim in the lakeside pool, or let the gentle sound of wind chimes lure you into an afternoon nap in a hammock.
Off-Grid Adobe Dome, Terlingua
This 250-square-foot desert dome outside of Big Bend National Park is an otherworldly destination — especially “Star Wars” fans in search of Tatooine. As one of Airbnb’s “most loved” homes, this adobe dome is situated in one of the few remaining territories under a dark sky ordinance. While you can expect unobstructed desert views, keep in mind that this off-grid home has a kitchen sink that pumps rainwater from a small cistern, and there’s a no-flush composting toilet. If you’re up for the challenge, this unique stay is a 25-minute drive from Terlingua Ghost Town.
