Cool Destinations Perfect for a Winter Road Trip in Texas
Chilly winter weather doesn’t have to cause cabin fever. Take advantage of the low temperatures and enjoy a road trip to one of these cool destinations — without breaking a sweat. Here are some of our favorite Texas winter getaways.
Spend Some Time by the Sea
Texans know the coast is a great place to beat summer heat, but cooler months are a great time to visit, too. Bring some heavy layers and enjoy brisk walks on the beach in Corpus Christi, explore nature indoors at Moody Gardens in Galveston, and watch the birds at South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center.
Take a Hike
Big Bend National Park encompasses the entire Chisos mountain range and offers more than 150 miles of hiking trails. Visit in February before the spring break crowds arrive and enjoy the solitude and splendor of trails along the Rio Grande, in the Chisos, and through the Chihuahuan Desert.
Remember the Alamo
San Antonio’s River Walk is one of our favorite couples’ destinations in the state. Stroll along the river, check out the shops in historic La Villita, and enjoy the water features of the Hyatt Regency’s amazing atrium as you walk through to Alamo Plaza and the Cradle of Texas Liberty.
Go West for Art’s Sake
Marfa is legendary in the Lone Star State for its mysterious lights. This little West Texas town near Davis Mountains State Park is also renowned worldwide for its modern-art scene. Set aside some time to visit the town’s 19 art galleries, including the Chinati Foundation — a former Army base-turned-art complex by late artist Donald Judd.
