Backyard Shed Makeover Ideas

By Abi Grise Morgan 8.9.24

Not getting much use out of your shed these days? Clear out the cobwebs and add creature comforts to transform your shed into the ultimate bonus room. That’s right. You can upcycle your broken lawn equipment graveyard into a reading room, mini gym, or wood shop. Here’s how to bring your backyard shed ideas to life safely.

Rehab Your Backyard Shed

Deep Clean

Remove everything from the shed. Decide what to relocate, donate, recycle, or toss. Sweep, vacuum, and wipe down all surfaces.

Inspect and Repair

Check for holes, cracks, or rot. Wooden sheds are especially susceptible to termites, so keep wood piles and standing water away. Seal windows and doors. Repair damaged roof tiles and leaks.

Ensure Airflow

Add ventilation, such as an AC unit or fan, to prevent mold and mildew. Then, insulate the walls with fiberglass batts, rigid foam boards, spray foam, or reflective foil (great for hot Texas summers). Wear proper protective gear when installing.

Upgrade Electrical and Lighting

Hire a licensed electrician if you want to add lighting or perhaps even windows. The U.S. Fire Administration reports that 1,225 home fire fatalities have occurred in the first six months of 2024 alone and that 7% of residential building fires are caused by electrical malfunction.

Repair or Replace Flooring

Fix damaged flooring and consider upgrading the material to laminate or tile (moisture-friendly options for greenhouses and pool cabanas) or carpet (sound reduction for music studios and reading nooks).

Paint

Add paneling or drywall and paint interior walls for a finished look. Lighter colors will help brighten the space as well as make it appear larger and the ceiling taller.

Secure It

Don’t take shortcuts on shed security. A flimsy combination lock can easily be cut. Install sturdy locks on doors and windows and ensure the hinges come with tamperproof pins and screws. Consider an alarm system with motion-sensor lights outside

Not sure what to do with that space yet? Here’s a little inspiration.

Backyard Shed Ideas

Take stock of your hobbies and imagine how you could transform the space into a little home-not-that-far-from-home.

Reading Nook

Add built-in bookshelves, a chaise lounge, cozy string lights, and a tea cart.

Office or Study

Create the ultimate work-from-home setup with a sit-to-stand desk, a coffee station, and a dry-erase or chalkboard wall.

Crafting Room or Art Studio

Set up a sturdy worktable, line the walls with custom or modular shelving, and prioritize good lighting.

Older Kids’ Playroom

Give them space to goof around with beanbags, games, crafts, a mini fridge, and fun posters.

Mini Gym

Finally, a dedicated space for the exercise bike! Invest in good speakers, a TV, and a water cooler.
