Discover the “Sparkling City by the Sea.”

Corpus Christi, the “Sparkling City by the Sea,” is tucked behind Padre Island and Mustang Island on the Texas Gulf. What started in the late 1830s as a trading post and settlement has grown into a vibrant port city with deep maritime roots.
Nowhere is that more evident than on North Beach, which should be the first stop for any first-timer’s trip to Corpus Christi. Start things off at the enormous and famous Texas State Aquarium. There, you’ll find more than 15 exhibits with sea turtles, river otters, stingrays, sharks, flamingos, and all manner of other maritime critters up close while learning about the importance of protecting marine habitats in Texas — and definitely don’t miss the dolphin show.
Just across the cove from the aquarium looms a massive aircraft carrier, the USS Lexington. After participating in nearly every major World War II operation in the Pacific, this 910-foot ship retired in 1991. To this day, it’s the oldest remaining fleet carrier in the world. Today, it’s a museum like no other; not only can history buffs explore the ship’s corridors and see 20 retired naval aircraft up close on the flight deck, but it’s also home to what has to be the most unique escape room experience in Texas.

For anglers of every style, Corpus Christi is a year-round playground with big water, big skies, and even bigger catches.

Texas Gulf towns are known for crazy-good seafood, and Corpus Christi arguably has the best in Texas. Lunch in at the Executive Surf Club in downtown Corpus, but don’t let the suit-and-tie name fool you. This laid-back shack serves up messy homestyle beach grub like shrimp wraps, fish sandwiches, and giant burgers, all to the tune of live music.
For something a little more coastal-classic, Water Street Oyster Bar is another must. The joint runs out of a historic mechanic shop and serves up salty, fresh oysters on the half shell, giant platters of fried seafood, and a blackboard special featuring a rotating menu of fresh Gulf catches.
Of course, Corpus Christi is home to some of the best shores on the Gulf for all kinds of activities. Get the full list of our favorite beaches in Texas here.
