Cool off and fill up at this sweet West Texas festival.

Cool off and fill up at this sweet festival.
If you have an unrepentant sweet tooth and want a good way to cool down in early July, there’s no better place to be than El Paso on the Sunday before Independence Day. Just show up hungry and try far more than 31 flavors of your favorite dessert provided by some of the greatest local and national ice cream vendors, as they converge during the dog days of summer.
The festivities take place from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday, July 2 (aka prime ice cream time).
A mere 10 miles from the El Paso International Airport is El Paso’s picturesque baseball field — Cohen Stadium. This event takes place outdoors — so be sure to pack the sunblock.
If it’s a sweltering day, and we think it could be, you’ll want to snag a seat early under the shady white tarps that cover half the stadium. But, if you want the best seats for the awesome fireworks, we recommend getting a spot down on the field.
El Paso offers plenty of lodging accommodations. But, for ease of access, we recommend the Candlewood Suites El Paso, which is only 1.1 miles from Cohen Stadium. Or if you want a fun spot for the kiddos, try out the Wyndham El Paso Airport Hotel and Water Park, which is just a hop and a skip from the airport and, yes, includes a small water park.
If you’re spending more than a day in town, you have to check out the beautiful Franklin Mountains State Park. Once you’re there, be sure to ride the Wyler Aerial Tramway, where you and your kids can take a Swiss-made gondola nearly 5,600 feet above sea level. You’ll get an awe-inspiring view of 7,000 square miles that encompasses three states and two countries.
