Power Pack: 5 Nutritious Options for Tasty School Lunches

By M. Elise Giller 8.22.16

The bell will ring any minute, and school will be back in session. As your kids inch another year closer to graduation, they’ll need a healthy, filling lunch — one that helps them concentrate and that they won’t trade for Twinkies and other treats at the cafeteria table. Here are five easy, creative lunchbox items that are both nutritious and delicious.

Main Dishes

  • A BLT wrap mixes up the usual sandwich scenario: Smear avocado across a whole wheat tortilla and then place bacon, lettuce, and tomato across it. Roll it up and you’re good to go!
  • Quesadillas are always a kid-pleaser, and wrapped in foil, they’ll stay warm until lunchtime. Fill them with cheese, grilled chicken, and spinach, and serve with a side of salsa.
  • Turkey and cheese roll-ups are like a salty version of fruit roll-ups — with the benefit of protein. Place a slice of cheddar cheese on the edge of a piece or two of deli turkey and roll them together. Pack them with some whole wheat crackers, and sandwiches will be a thing of the past.

Side Dishes

  • Fruit skewers make a pretty and healthy dessert option: Simply chop apples, oranges, pineapple, and grapes into bite-sized pieces and place them on a small bamboo skewer. For bonus kid points, add a few marshmallows to the mix.
  • Sweet potato chips transform up the usual chips-and-dip idea into a healthier, delicious alternative. Slice sweet potatoes thin, toss with some olive oil, and bake in the oven until they’re crisp. Pack with a side of guacamole for extra dipping pleasure.
