Deck the Halls Without Breaking the Bank
You don’t need the jingle of spare change to decorate your home for the holidays. Pare down your style for a chic, put-together look, and get into the spirit of the season on a budget with these dollar-saving tips.
- Get a fresh start. Make room for holiday spirit by decluttering your home.
- Look at your decor with a new eye. Just because that tabletop lamp or those brass candlesticks aren’t seasonal doesn’t mean they can’t add to your holiday brightness. Small mirrors placed near candlelight, for instance, or peeking out from behind the branches of a Christmas tree, will help add a glow to the room.
- Showcase your best pieces. And let them stand alone. Your grandmother’s menorah or your grandfather’s toy train probably need no other knickknacks to make an impression.
- Go monochromatic. If you’re busy making centerpieces and other decorations, go with a simple, curated look. It’s both cost effective and chic.
- Clip holiday cards to a string. Pin the string flush against a wall and suddenly you have a wall decorated with bright, pretty cards. It will cheer you every time you look at it.
- Splurge on quality wrapping paper. But stick to two or three patterns. Make big, reinforced bows for a window-shop look.
- Drop the kitsch. Unless it’s of sentimental value. The cartoon welcome mats and toilet-paper cozies aren’t decorator-approved. Sorry.
- Try only hanging white lights outside. And trim just a few exterior lines of your home. The effect is clean, lovely, and looks expensive.
- Forget live trees and wreaths. High-end artificial versions last for years and look just as nice. Or try these festive alternatives.
- Invest in pieces that will last. You’ll use plain pillar candles and table linens in solid colors throughout the year, not just during the holidays.
