City Spotlight: Eagle Pass
The sleepy border town of Eagle Pass was the first American settlement on the Rio Grande, founded as a temporary outpost for the Texas militia during the Mexican-American War. Today, it is one of six binational metropolitan areas and it offers visitors a rich, multicultural experience that defines the unique world of the Texas border country.
Visit the Historic Fort
A great place to start your visit to Eagle Pass is historic Fort Duncan. Originally established as little more than a garrison for American troops during the Mexican-American War, Fort Duncan played an important role in border history for more than 50 years as the staging ground for border patrols and for protecting Eagle Pass residents from outlaws and Native American raids.
In the 1880s, the famous Black Seminole Scouts were organized at the fort. During World War I, American troops were stationed at nearby Camp Eagle Pass. Today, the Fort Duncan Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday for visitors to tour the historic grounds, which sit on a bluff overlooking a scenic stretch of the Rio Grande. Seven of the original buildings have been restored. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Fort Duncan features exhibits interpreting the history of the fort, Eagle Pass, and the borderlands.
Enjoy the Festivities (and the Food)
The heart and soul of Eagle Pass is Main Street, a boulevard that rises up the slope from the Rio Grande and past the historic Romanesque revival courthouse of Maverick County. Main Street is lined with shops where you can find imported goods, Western wares, and novelties along slot gacor the way. At night, locals head down to the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino Hotel, which sits south of the town along the Rio Grande and offers lodging, dining, and live concerts.
