By Staci Parks 10.11.17

The most wonderful time of the year is approaching — fall in Texas. With it comes the countdown to Halloween. This year, make Halloween a family affair with these five Texas-inspired costume ideas. Whether you have an eager toddler or a wary teen, these ensembles are perfect for a night of trick-or-treating or a Halloween party. The best part? Most of these family-friendly looks have DIY potential.

Howdy, Folks!

No matter if you’re a native Texan or one of the millions of new residents the Lone Star State has welcomed in the past decade, a State Fair of Texas theme is an instant classic. Chances are if you’re anywhere near Dallas, you’re planning on visiting the iconic fair, so take that inspiration to craft your own Big Tex. You’ll easily re-create one of Texas’ favorite fall activities with the presence of a Fletcher’s Corny Dog, your favorite livestock, and a butter sculpture in your group.

Texas-Made

As Texans, we have an overwhelming love for our state, and we don’t hide it. Take that admiration trick-or-treating this year with Texas-founded fare as your Halloween attire. Go as an iconic orange-and-white-striped Whataburger order number or a packet of fancy ketchup. Take a colorful approach and dress as your favorite 7-Eleven Slurpee. If you’re looking for an equally cool approach to Halloween, opt for your favorite Blue Bell ice cream flavor.

Lone Star Legends

From entertainment to sports, there’s no shortage of A-list names with Texas ties. Pay homage to Queen of Tejano music Selena or don some braids and a signature red bandanna for your best Willie Nelson impression. If you’re more of an athletically inclined family, dress as your favorite sports players. With several professional teams throughout the state, there are plenty of athletes to choose from. Who doesn’t want to be J.J. Watt or Dirk Nowitzki for a day?

Texans on TV

Our state’s folklore has made its way to screens of all sizes, and family is often at the center. Turn to pop culture for creative, witty takes on some of TV’s most beloved Texans. Dress as the first family of fictional Texas football and channel the Taylors from Friday Night Lights. If you’re a big group, grab some Dillon Panthers or East Dillon Lions attire for a team ensemble. Or put on your best bolo tie and dress as the ever-colorful Ewings from Dallas. (As if you needed a reason to dress your family in ’80s chic.)

Status Symbols

Maybe you’re looking for a way to represent all the great things about Texas and you’re up for a family art project. Together, craft buildings, landmarks, and symbols from some of your favorite Texas spots. Think: Dallas’ Reunion Tower, a yellow rose, a longhorn, and the Alamo. Or take plain white T-shirts and craft your own four-person state flag of Texas.

No matter who — or what — you and your family dress as this Halloween, keep the youngest members of your family secure by making sure their costumes fit properly and following these tips from the CDC. And look out for more ways to have a happy and safe Halloween.
